GUIDE: Hinge Identification
There are many different types of hinges, here are a few of the more common types.
| Kitchen cupboard / cabinet door hinge - concealed cup hinges These are mostly used on cupboard doors in kitchens. They all require mounting plates that go inside the frame (note these are not universal in design, they will usually require the same brand to work with each other). The most common application is when the hinge overlays the door frame when closed. This is called overlay. You can also get hinges which only half lay on the frame when closed (Half overlay) , and then hinges which will sit inside the frame completely when door is closed (Inset). We supply all 3 types. Here is an example of a standard soft closing hinge for an 18mm thick cupboard door (will stop doors slamming by dampening before closing). Or click here for an example of a standard non soft close, but still sprung hinge If you need unsprung hinges to work with handless cupboard doors, you can try this one | ![]() |
| Butt hinges These are hinges with knuckles and will not be sprung. The sizes range from carrying very small cupboard doors to very large and heavy entrance doors. The FTD range is a good place to start for a typical cabinet butt hinge, or have a look at some other options below: For an interior door - usually 33mm thick, a good quality stainless steel (ball bearings inside for extra lubrication) For an entrance door - you will normally need a better heavier duty and fire rated stainless steel hinge, we sell this one (notice it’s in a pack of 3 as many doors will take 3 per door) If the floor is not flat and need the hinge to avoid any small obstruction when opening- these are called rising butt hinges and can be found here | ![]() ![]() |
| Concealed hinge These are completely hidden when the cupboard is closed, and cannot be seen from either inside or outside. They range from small to much larger doors | ![]() ![]() |
